- Debra Mihalic Staples is a two-time winner in the South Carolina Arts Commission Fiction Project, a competition that includes authors Sue Monk Kidd, Ron Rash and Bret Lott among its past winners. Her nonfiction has appeared in numerous anthologies, magazines and newspapers, including Pine Mountain Sand and Gravel: Contemporary Appalachian Writing, Catfish Stew: Tender Morsels of Fine Southern Literature, High Country News, The Denver Post and South Carolina Wildlife.
